Tool

Garden size visualiser

Enter a garden's width and depth to see it drawn to scale, its area, and whether a shed, trampoline, patio set or car would fit.

New build gardens vary a lot, and a garden that looks generous on a site plan can feel small once fences go up. The size on a listing is easy to skim past until you are standing in it.

Enter the width and depth in metres or feet to see the garden drawn to scale, its area in square metres and square feet, and whether everyday things such as a shed, a 12 ft trampoline or a patio table would fit.

Measure the lawn and patio you would actually use, inside fences and walls. Developers often quote garden sizes from the site plan, so check them on a visit. A trampoline also needs clear space around it, so allow more room than its size alone.

Drawn to scale. Each grid square is 1 m × 1 m. Green shapes are the things from the list that fit, where there is room to place them side by side.

How this tool works

  1. The area is the width multiplied by the depth, shown in square metres and square feet.
  2. The garden is drawn to scale with a 1 metre grid and the house along the top.
  3. Each item is checked against the garden both ways round. The ones that fit are drawn in, side by side, where there is room for them together.

What it assumes

  • The garden is treated as a rectangle. Measure the part you would use, inside fences and walls.
  • Item sizes are typical: an 8 × 6 ft shed, a 12 ft (3.66 m) trampoline, 3 × 3 m for a table and six chairs, and 4.5 × 1.8 m for a family car.
  • A trampoline needs clear space around it, and sheds may need a gap from the fence, so allow more room in practice.

Garden size visualiser: common questions

Short answers to the things people ask most.

How do I measure a new build garden before it is finished?

Ask the sales team for the site plan with dimensions, or the garden size for your plot. Check whether it is measured to the fence line and whether any of it is a slope, a bin store or a parking space.

How big is a typical new build garden?

It varies by developer, house type and site. Corner plots and detached homes often have more space. Compare the dimensions of plots on your shortlist rather than relying on photos of the show home.

Does a 12 ft trampoline fit in a 4 metre wide garden?

Only just. A 12 ft trampoline is about 3.66 m across, and safety advice is to leave clear space around it, so a 4 m wide garden is very tight.
